Ugh, this is the last straw for shared serving via Dreamhost. They’ve lost my blog database twice (luckily refound after prodding), throttled two of my sites on account of increased traffic (popularity), had too many e-mail problems to count, and finally they take down this site because they believe it is under a DDoS attack, which after a full day of downtime they tell me probably wasn’t an attack, but increased traffic due to a significant linkage. I knew this already, as I had been linked on a site that I won’t post here as it is very Not Safe For Work (NSFW). I guess this is what I get for 20$ a month.
I need to find a better solution for hosting, which will probably put me in the dedicated server arena. This is territory I am fully unfamiliar with. First of all is the jump in price. I don’t make money from this or any other site. Sure, some people have donated money to help the cause (which I am truly grateful for), but I’ve put in much more than I have received. Going from 20$ a month to something like 100$ a month is pretty significant. Especially considering that I would be in charge of managing the server somewhat. Seriously, I do not need to be obsessing over that aspect of things as well…
Not sure where I am going with this post. I need to find a better hosting solution, if you have any good leads, leave a comment. Thanks for reading and my apologies for the downtime.
There seems to be a couple dreams that got mixed up…
First of all I remember following the story of this guy who was showing a series of stamps to a postmaster in Germany (I think). Anyway, the stamps were all photographs of the guy who was showing them to the postmaster. Self-portraits from different time periods. He was explaining how each one used original materials and costumes from the eras. He was also explaining his life in a larger picture as well. Said that he had done such and such for years and that finally he had had enough and saved up 25′000$ so that he could do everything perfect in these photos. I guess he wanted to do photography for stamps (though thinking about it in waking life, that doesn’t seem to be a very lucrative career choice). The postmaster was obviously very impressed at the man’s abilities and could see the effort that went into producing the stamps. The guy was a pretty decent model too. I remember being low in the scene, almost like a hidden camera in a briefcase sitting on a chair.
Another one had me participate in a race between a human shopper with shopping cart and a robotic shopping cart. The funny thing was that the robotic cart was so small, like it could only hold three items or something. Anyway, I was in control of this robotic cart. It was awful. It was supposed to find the correct item, which the first was a plant in a pot. It broke several trying to get them into itself. Once it did get one, it drove around too frenetically and ended up dumping it three feet away. I had to push it at certain points. It was a complete disaster. Also, this wasn’t a cart I had made, which seems weird.
The Daily Photo Project and the list of related photo projects was mentioned in yesterday’s NY Times article (sorry, free registration required by NY Times). It was mainly about Noah Kalina and the phenomenon surrounding his ‘Everyday’ video.
On that note, Noah also sent me a link to Scion’s 3 Years Advert created by LA-based motion graphics firm, Buck. It’s obviously playing off of Ahree Lee’s ‘Me’ video and is a little disturbing. It’s not disturbing because it’s a “rip-off” but because it plays with the idea that someone loves her car so much that she wills her head to become square. That’s sick.
Also, someone e-mailed me and said that there is a Dunkin Donuts advert out there in a similar vein. If you have a link for it… make a comment to this post! I’d be interested to see it.
Had this dream as I slept in the car on my way to NYC…
I was in my studio, and it was really cold. The windows were all frosted up and I thought it was really weird. I checked the windows and it was really windy and kind of blowing through the cracks and whatnot. So I was going to pull the curtains over to block some of the draft. But as I undid them, they were all frosted up as well and bits of frostiness fell off. Odd, I thought.
Went back to talking with Sean and Nick. Sean was saying very sarcastically how he loves doing commercial work and how rewarding it is to please a client. Uh huh. I got a phone call then, and I looked at the ID and it said ‘Hello’ and some numbers. I thought it said ‘Holly’ and wondered why Holly would be contacting me. When I answered, a woman was on the other side acting a bit hysterical. She was sobbing and said, “I… was… following him. And… I hit him… Now… he’s dead!” and then there was nothing. I asked who it was, was she alright, where she was.. all that sort of stuff, but I got nothing back. I tried to think of what to do next
What remember was that I was in a class where people were reading their reports out loud. One person wrote about Guy Debord (or someone that I can’t quite remember the name of) and it was an okay report. Then the next person started reading his paper. It started with the same line as the first guy’s. He kept reading though, until myself and another person started making statements out loud about it being a total scam. The two people had obviously taken these off the internets. It was a lame scene.

I made these last summer, but only now got around to photographing.
For the first time this year (finally!) I added new photos to the Daily Photo Project. All of January and February are there, ending with the first image of my new spectacles. I’m sure someone will comment that they hate/love them, so I’ll just upfront say that I think they’re pretty great in real life.
In other news… I will be adding a couple new projects this weekend. I just need to get some decent documentation
Oh, and the video “Living My Life Faster” of the daily photos will be featured in an exhibition of graduate student work at Art Chicago over the weekend of April 26-29. I’ll even be in attendance, if you’re in the Chicago area and want to grab a beer. It’s going to be just a week after the grad show exhibition opens, and a week before our thesis is due, so I should be in rare form at that time. FYI.
