Does this need explanation?

Last night Matthew and Cullen put together the BMX Stunt Spectacluar show in the Forum Gallery. This was my submission to the show. It’s plastic ribbon woven into garden fencing. I wanted to do some type work with it, but ran out of time. Will be working a little on that coming up though. It’s about 3′ by 3′.
Here are two test movies (latest QuickTime) for the heart motion piece. Hopefully the podcast will up and ready for download soon. You can be sure I’ll link to it when it becomes available. They are videos of me walking in from the left, saying “I Love You” and then walking out to the right. The first one is of the slices going left to right, the second movie is of the slices going right to left. Spooky.

I’ve been wanting to do this for a long time now, and just today I found MacOSaiX, a program to easily create photomosaics. Yeah, so it’s the latest Daily Photo image composed of 1600 previous images. It’s geeky and self-obsessed, I know.

Seven heads for our marionette project.

Draft comp for our digital marionette…

I’ve been collecting envelopes, mail, and paper with one blank side since somewhere around 8th grade (with varying degrees of voracity, and the occasional trashing). It took about 7 years before I came up with the idea to fold the ‘one-sided’ papers in half and bind them to make sketchbooks. Eariler this year (what would be about 15 years), I finally came up with the idea to turn the envelopes inside-out to make pretty patterned envelopes. I like the idea that I’m exposing the security for everyone to see as well as the recycling aspect.
This is the stack so far. I ran out of tape again with about 10-15 envelopes left.
I’ll be putting together a collection of the security patterns if I get a scanner. For now, see this collection of envelope security patterns, or this photographic survey of envelope security patterns.
While I didn’t do any advertising of the event, on Friday I debuted my sign language matchbooks. At the Incredibly Thin Miniature Spectacular, I showed a full ASL alphabet as well as a version of the original inspiration for the matchbooks (see #2 of previous post). Dave Glanz took the photograph for me, which I’m thankful for, since I haven’t gotten my new digital camera yet.
What I’m really surprised at is that no one got drunk (and stupid) enough to set the matches ablaze. I’m very thankful, but it wouldn’t have shocked me…
I’ll get a page made specifcally for the matchbooks soon. But since I’m in the process of moving to Detroit, and getting prepared for grad school, it might be a while. Need to get my new camera as well I think.
Whoops, guess I should thank Ryan for asking me to be a part of the festivities. I probably wouldn’t have gotten around to making the full alphabet without the impetus of the event. So, thanks!

Working on a typeface inspired by a strip of folded paper. See the current status of this type.

Most of my time (outside of work of course) in the past month was spent cutting, folding and gluing paper houses together for the installation I created for Pittsburgh Filmmakers’ Media Tonic 2 event. This is what it looked like with the lights on. All the paper is junk mail that Pittsburgh Filmmakers received between my proposal’s acceptance and the exhibition. The video projected on top of the houses (which were mounted on the wall) was made up of the spam e-mail that they received during that period as well.
I’ve also made a few more shirts this past month. Waiting for people to receive the new ones before I post some poor photos. Oooooh, can you feel the anticipation???
