Daily Photo Video - 3 formats

Living My Life Faster - 8 years of JK’s Daily Photo Project on Vimeo

I posted 3 versions of the Daily Photo Project video last night. Tell all your friends. Then tell them to make fun of me…

[update due to being featured on Yahoo!'s The 9] I am still taking photos and will probably update the video every year. I made the animation in Adobe After Effects which allowed me to align the eyes with a minimal (hours vs. weeks) amount of work. And Thank You in advance for all your comments… I probably won’t have time to respond to them all, but they are much appreciated!

  1. Hey! Congratulations on getting featured on youtube! Though I think your project should be featured too.
    Bye

It’s funny that you saw the video featured on YouTube… It was only up for a couple hours. I think all the low ratings got it kicked off the front page in record time. I liked how everyone called me gay or were mad that their own projects which “took hundreds of hours, with tons of special effects” didn’t get featured.

    But thanks for the comment.

  2. This is wikid cool! Cred to you my friend!

  3. Oh– it’s okay. If your video doesn’t get called “gay” by someone– you’re not a realy youtuber. Didn’t you know? /sarcasm.

Dude… your video was way cooler than the 3-year chick.

  4. Boy howdy. I hope the grammar and spelling police don’t come by here, because that one was a doozy.

  5. That was neat, Thanx :)

  6. Now what are you working on? Very cool

Well, I’m in grad school, and this c71123 blog is all devoted to things I am working on/experiencing.

  7. Very interesting. I was mesmerized at the different looks you went through. You are a nice looking young man but you had some stretches there that were ummmm ill advised. How’s that? LOL

  8. you looked so cute w/short hair! cuts it!

  9. Awesome work man!

Hey, congrats on getting promoted on Yahoo.com’s The 9 (http://9.yahoo.com) today. That is awesome, and takes a lot of discipline. Such a cool vid!

  11. Hello,

    Very well done.
A bit of a frightening reminder of how fast it all goes by!
    Great work.
    Thanks

jk- too cool! project shows an interesting commitment to a long term goal. i have to assume the photos will continue till your dead (and beyond?)

In this case your assumption does not make “an ass of u and me”. Believe it.

And while I won’t re-edit the video very often with the newest photos, you can always check out the Daily Photo Project page to see how things are progressing.

  13. nifty, very cool. your music scheme was darn near perfect for it to. On a personal note, from a females perspective, you look WAY better with your hair short…. I mean, come on, you’ve got the whole Ted Kazinsky thing going on… ;-)

  14. Very cool! I like the mustache dance at the end.

  15. Hey - awesome! & congrats on your Y! the 9 feature, too! I’m undergoing wieght loss surgery in the next two months - I was considering a photo montage myself for progess etc - any tips? Thanks!

My Advice: Simply start. Don’t stop.

    Found your site from http://9.yahoo.com

    Awesome job!

  17. That was amazing, thank you.

  18. dude.. mad props!
wicked long hair.. you should keep it..

  19. Now that was interesting… loved it!

  20. Looking good- until the moustache phase!

  21. Straight or Gay, you were so HOT….then came the beard with the long hair and the pony tail…sigh.

  22. That was amazing and fun to watch. Are you going to continue the project?

As long as I am alive, I will continue.

  23. My respect to you. What an awesome amount of dedication and effort on putting 8 years worth of pictures in a video. This gotta be one of my favorite videos.

And if you are gonna keep taken pictures of yourself I’ll see you in another 8 years. hahaha

    Later.

  24. This is amazing, I havnt seen anything like it!
and I thought the All American Rejects’ music video was cool…

Are you going to continue the project?

    PS cut your hair

I will continue for as long as I am alive.

  25. well you’re featured on the 9 today, so at least that will last for 24 hours. you change your hair a LOT! might I suggest you chop it again?

You might suggest… but I will not oblige. Be patient. ;)

  26. Wow… I’m curious about how you were able to maintain the same exact facial expression in every photo. That must have taken some dedication, kudos to you for 8 years! I would have liked a still photo of a “before” and “after” shot at the end… other than that, perfecto!

Making an expressionless face is easy, try it. As far as placement is concerned, I used Adobe After Effects’ Image Stabilization feature to align all the eyes. Saved me weeks of time, seriously.

Did you notice at the end of the video when the images fade to white? The images flip back and forth between the last shot and an early one. I guess it’s perfecto now! Whee!

  27. JK-

In a world of instant gratification, one where people give up if something takes longer than a McMinute, your project is one that should inspire us all to press on, no matter the perceived barriers or time frame.

    Nicely done!
    Chris

  30. i thought that was awesome! by the way, you were rockin’ the long hair… looks good on ya ;)

Dude, how did you do it … its really cool!!

I took a photograph of myself every day for 8 years.

  32. Awesome work effort.Should be in the top of youtube videos. very artistic work.

  33. You did get featured on The 9. Yahoo’s daily video of 9 neat websites. That’s how I found you. Congratulations, it’s great.

That was a great experiment. My son, and I will attempt something similar in a father son project. Thanks, Randy

  35. Wow…You turned out to be cute :)

  36. How can he have the same exact facial expression every day for 8 years?? I think it’s bogus!

Making an expressionless face is easy, try it.

Oh, wait… do I have to explain how the photo is 1 second of my day and that I don’t have an expressionless face the other 86399 seconds of the day? Although my lady might say otherwise some days… :( !

  37. This was/is a great idea. Very original and time consuming. Great work, you are a genius!

  38. Congrats! You’re on the 9! All I can say is “WOW”…

  39. first of all - i definitely like you better with hair on your head, but not on your face. and not the real short hair.

second, how the heck long did it take you to accomplish this?

8 years. How do you like them apples?!?

  40. Hey that was great! You really ought to do this for the remainder of your days. I’ll bet no one on the planet has ever done that.

  41. You’ve got featured at the Yahoo “THE 9″ :)

Amigo tu video esta increible, es el mejor que he visto, me quedé asombrado, gracias

  43. Woh, you should totally shave off that face fluff and get a mop chop - you are so much cuter without all that hair!

  44. I dug it, and you look better with short hair, no whiskers!

  45. I just loved your project! I’m curious how you were able to do it without any real noticable movement of your head though…very cool! Loved watching your hear change and grow. Of course it doesn’t hurt that you’re a handsome guy, does it?

    ;) Brooke

I achieved the lack of movement by using Adobe After Effects Image Stabilization feature.

It hurts to hear you call me handsome, yes.

  46. Looks like you made it to Yahoo!’s The Nine. Go you!

  47. So cool- just saw this on The 9. You’re hot!

  48. That was awsome! The way I heard the girl on the9 emphasise on EIGHT YEARS , she made it sound like twenty! I was expecting a big change then I realised 1998 ain’t really that far back when you are in your late Twenties.
I personally would have waited a couple years more just to round it up but still you probably got tired of daily pics.

  49. That was genius! I kinda want to do the same thing and see how much my face and/or body changes over the years.

  50. So which hair style did you like the best? LOL
You age very well BTW. Very creative!

Anything short, for ease of use.

  51. You’re on the Yahoo 9 as well. Congrats. Id forget to take pictures and screw it up in the first month.

  52. hehehe…u had all kinds of phases. a ryan seacrest, a jesus, an army recruit,a johnny depp…that was too cool. You get 5 stars from me!

  53. that is so cool. congrats on having the follow through to finish a project like that. was it really every day? and may i say, you look better with short shaggy hair. ;o)

    adieu

There were 6 months in the beginning when I was in Antarctica and didn’t have my camera. I would never let anything like that happen again though.

  54. Watched it twice. I especially was interested in watching your skin breakout and clear up, (oily zone in your left cheek area?) and watching your hair ebb and flow. Somewhere around the middle, your jaw line filled out too. Really facinating.

I showed this to my 5th grade students and they think you’re the man. (high praise from ultracool 5th graders) They want to know how old you were when you started, why you did this and what you do now. Very cool — thanks for sharing!

This is absolutely the coolest comment I have ever gotten. Thanks 5th graders!

I was 22 years old when I started in 1998.

The whole project began out of spite. I had just purchased a digital camera (Nikon CoolPix 900), and it was rather expensive. My girlfriend asked me why I bought it and what I was going to do with it. I explained. She asked me if I was “going to use it every day”, with sarcastic inflection. I told her yes, and resolved to do so. The project began there.

For answers to many other questions about the project, visit the FAQs.

I am currently attending graduate school at the Cranbrook Academy of Art, studying 2d design.

Seriously, loved reading this comment. Thanks.

  59. That was really hot when you shaved your head and grew a little stubble. You should do that again. Not digging the beard, though.

    Really cool video.

  60. um that was pretty cool. props for keepin that up for 8 years…ur insane. but in a good way :)

  61. I applaud you, anykind of commitment that takes 8 years is some serious sh!t! Congrats for making it through 8 years and not quiting sometime in between.

  62. i agree with spuds. your video blows that three year chick out of the water. way to go!

  63. Found you on “THE NINE” good shit man!

  64. I like the extreme hair changes towards the end by going from a shaved head to a Johnny Depp “Pirates” look.

  65. Very very cool.

    Greetings from Buenos Aires, Argentina..
    Bye!

  69. What a cool vid! Are you single? You’re way hott!!!!!!

As much as I love the internet, I don’t think I’m prepared for internet dating.

Oh, that’s right, I’m taken. Nevermind

    ou ou!

  70. I am… hypnotized! It’s a crazy feeling when you look right into your eyes, as if we’ve been face to face for 8 straight years. Awesome work! What I prefer to analyze in there is your personal life “phazes” like when you got a haircut, when you only wore dark clothes for a while, when you decided to go bald-shaved, or the latest one when you kind of become a hippie and let everything grow. I even sens a trip somewhere in there, I see sunburn!!!!! :D Once again, amazing work. Art.
    ♥♥♥♥

  71. that was prob. one of the coolest things ever! i can’t believe you did that for eight freaking years! thats so crazy! ummm yeah, that was so great. i think you look your best with the short messy hair… and the glasses. so dreamy.

  72. On October 4th, 2006 at 14:35, Stephanie said:

That took a lot of work. Man, I hope you do it for the rest of your life. It was like a movie, where the flower grows and blooms. Now you just need to get old, so you can get the whole spectrum in there.

  73. God, that’s a great job, I love watching these things, but this one takes the cake. I’m supremely jealous that your hair manages to look pretty frigging awesome no matter how you put it. Kudos, mate!

  74. Thats such a crazy idea. How did you remember to take a picture of yourself everyday? I love how you could see the different times of year it was based on your complexion. Pretty neat.

    Courtney

I like to think of it this way: How do you remember to eat every day?

Also, color me humbled by my seasonal-forecasting complexion…

  75. I think you look hot with the short hair, and no glasses! ditch the mush-stash! :-) I dont think i would be able to do that for 8 yrs. nice work!!!!!
I dont think you aged all that much!

  76. WOW!!…that was really neat!! I bet you noticed the changes in your face alot more than the average viewer!!

  77. Congrats on making “The 9″. I thought the long hair and facial hair was very sexy. You really get better looking as you mature — of course, in my opinion we all do! Seeing your dedication to this project, I have no doubt that you will succeed in everything you do in life. Good luck!

    Denise

  78. Super Cool!!!!
Great imagination a big patience. !Congratilations!!! ;-)

  79. Exquisite concept and great execution! Amazing how fast your hair grows. Dig the music, credits, short hair and smaller framed glasses; can’t get with the facial hair, though.

  80. If you have any children, in the future or currently, I think you should definitely do the same sort of thing with one of them. Starting from day one to…18 years, maybe they’ll want to continue. The music was equally genius and your composer/creater deserves as many props.

  81. Hey,this was really cool. It was interesting to see your face mature. I realized at some point you were getting your hair cut really short or shaved off for the effect. I have to say, you were most appealing with the hair a little long and a really short beard. Didn’t like the end with the long scruffy hair on your face. It made it look like your mustache was flapping in the wind. Interesting effect, but not your best look. Makes me want to do this with my kids. How in the world did you get you chin in exactly the same place all the time?????

I have never cut my hair just for the effect in the video. For reals. And I have said earlier, aligned the eyes (which translates to the chin as well) using After Effects.

  82. On October 4th, 2006 at 14:51, Claudia said:

    This was awsome !

  83. Absolutly awsome, I hope you continue your project. I cant wait to see it after 30 years

  84. mad props, man. awesome project. thanks for sharing :)

  85. Way cuter with longer hair

  86. It was really neat watching you age. It would be interesting to do this type of project on someone going from age 10 to 18 or something like that…

I too would have liked to see beginning and end photos next to each other at the end. Still cool though. (Didn’t you ever change homes during those 8 yrs??)

I have moved at least once every single year. Just need to find a whitish wall. The video compression helps make it seem like the background is always the same.

  87. This was cool but I had a few questions:

What was your starting age and ending age?

Why every day vs every week?

How was your head in the same EXACT spot for all the photos?

… and the same exact facial expression.

    Awesome project.

    22 to 30 (so far)

Originally I was trying to see the day to day differences that I experienced. Just stuck with it. Now it’s what people think is crazy about it. Not that much more difficult anyway. Well, six times harder…

After Effects Image Stabilization helped with consistent positioning.

Have you ever gotten a Driver’s License? It’s that easy.

  88. dude … that was awesome!

That was amazing man,a lot of hard work i am sure. And as long as i am here i will put in my two cents about your hair style: I think men with long hair are sexy!

  90. Its amazing how cute you were with short hair and how horridly creepy you look with it long.

  91. Handsome! Brilliant! Loved the way you got the hair and mustache to flow! Funny! Loved the guidance counselor bit with the long hair.

You’ve got it all. Be a filmaker.

  92. On October 4th, 2006 at 15:04, Colleen said:

Very thoughtful. I am astounded by the very idea. Feels like life at times. I loved the music too! Good job!

  93. You look like you went through the Mid-West High School Kid to College Hippie transition in your video - just wondering if you went to O.U.

I did not go to O.U. I attended the Minneapolis College of Art + Design

  94. I really thought it was neat how you can see your facial features hardening as time wore on them. Your jaw widens the older you got. I like the fading of the facial hair when you decided to grow or shave it also. Longish hair with a goatee is a good look for you. Awesome work. Hope to see you again in a few years lol.

  95. Dude…This has GOT to be the coolest video ever! You’re a stud throughout all phases of this video and my gosh….how DID you remember to do this every day for 8 friggin years? Bravo friend…Bravo!

  96. Very interesting to see with all the changes in your style that you barely changed. 8 years didn’t do much to age you. In all honesty, you look real cute, even when you’re grungy. Take care and hope you bring about another impressive set like that one. Byee.

  97. Wow, this is awesome! I have a friend who had the invisable braces for about 18 months, I told him he should do this same exact thing to see the progress, but he didn’t.

    V

  98. As a salon owner and stylist
I say every look was hot on you.
    This is so impressive.
I got a little giddy when I saw your head shaved and it growing back out to long! I thought, “Weeeee! That was fun watching.”
Sweet project, you are dedicated and cool.

Oh, and the video was awesome. Nice accomplishment.

  101. Schweet.
    That is fantastic.
It’s cool to see how many styles you have had over the years. (My favorite was the one that looked that it lasted no longer than about a week…kind of a goateeish sort of thing.)
It would be cool if we could look through these slower though…like a slideshow we could control on our own…just because I’m weird like that and although the fast is bombdiggity (well done with the music and the pictures, they go really well together)it would also be fun to slowly see for ourselves the change in a more gradual manner.
    Awesome.

  102. What a lotta work! I admire you for sticking with it! Few people have that much discipline, dedication and creativity. I especially liked watching your hair grow after it was buzzed. You have a great future ahead of you. The negative comments came from lazy slobs who aren’t doing anything with their lives except watching tv and surfing the net. Don’t let them get you down. The rest of us think you’re amazing!

  103. very impressed sir. congrats on finishing. i’m in media production and this is better than a lot of the stuff i’ve done or seen. maybe you should think about film or a production career…unless that’s what you’re already doing. lol. congrats, again.

  104. I love this concept. I wish that I would have done this with my children. Maybe I should start today! How wonderfull to have a video of their growing and changing. Looking forward to your yearly updates. P.S. You are aging well I might say!

  105. I saw your video on The 9 and was amazed. What I liked about your project the most was how you put it together with that catchy music. Great job.

  106. Cool video. You looked so cute with short hair! The whole beard and mustache thing…ugg. Good work on the video!

  107. that’s dedication. are you still keeping it up? the music fits perfectly…

Yes, keeping up with this. Infrequent updates at the Daily Photo Project page.

I would say Congrats on completing it, but I dont know if its done. Amazing dedication to this project!

  110. What dedication.
Fact: You look gorgeous when your hair is mid length to shortish with no facial hair. You even look like a lovable nerd with those retro, millitary issue glasses. However, you started looking like a person whose lost their job, lost their woman (man) , buried their favorite dog, started recreational drugs and decided that he was Jesus returned. I guess some people dig that look. I appeal to your vanity. Hot women( men) will adore you. Just cut that mustache and keep the hair trimmed.

Anyway, great job. If its not too much trouble can you keep it up( every 6 months for the next 20 years. I want to see how well you age. I want to catch the 50 lbs weight gain or the receding hairline.

  111. A real Piece of ART, well done, keep it going/
I’ll see you in 8 years.

    Mike

    PS: Nice one again

  112. Wow, thats so amazing. Must of been really hard reemebering every single day to take a picture of your self. I was playing aerosmith’s baby please don’t go over the song you had, it works better. lol, but seriously. Amazing effort, its really cool and something new. You’re proof that meh looking teens grow up to be super hot. When your hair was somewhat long, you were really good looking. Good project

Super interesting watching the changes unfold and how most of the time you were clean shaven, then let go of that clean image at some point. I bet someone could analyze the hell out of this.

  137. i think wat you did is really neat!! cant believe you kept that up for 8 whole years!! WOW!! well awesome work! by the way, you are a very good loooking guy! try cutting your hair short again!!

  138. dude..that was very wicked sweet! it’s cool how ur mustache moves alot when u had it in the middle..looked like it was goin to fly away…one suggestion though..

cut the hair and lose the glasses, but keep the hair shaggy…you’d get some ladies like that bro.

  139. FANTASTIC!!!!
I wish I would have thought of this! It is a good way to keep a record of our ever-changing looks. What kind of process did you use to position yourself in the exact same place for these pics? Your eyes are looking at the same point…It’s FANTASTIC!!!!!

  140. Wow, good thing you haven’t changed that much… if I’d done that, I’d look like a weeble, pregnancy, + 25 pounds, - 30, another kid, another weight gain, another diet, yoyo… I’m getting sick thinking about it…. but great project.

  141. When you look at where you’ve been, is there any place you wish you could go back and pause or stop?

There’s this great Japanese movie called After Life about what happens after you die. Basically, you go to purgatory where you have to choose one moment from your entire life to remember for eternity. I’m fairly happy with where I am at currently and would rather continue living in the present than return to some nostalgic place. But that’s me.

  142. I think you should ask your mom for baby pictures. I think we need a prespective prior to the daily pictures. you might have to make it a seperate video, but it’s fun watching you grow. I’m sure you were a cute baby!

  143. I watched this about 5 times stright though! Amazing the trasnsformation from young akward boy to cool hot guy……strange!

  144. My wife says that you look better with long hair, but no mustache.

  145. Love it… Life really does fly.

  146. Hi! Your creation is beautiful. It’s beautiful because of your image, always changing but always basicly the same. It’s beautiful because it’s the final product of working a lot of time just to create someting that may reflect the only visible evidence of time: The change. You have acomplished someting that is so significative for a lot of people these times we are living now.
Thanks for sharing your time with us. Thanks for remind us that time is just an illusion but we all agree about it.
I am sending you a big and strong hug.

  147. Amazing.
    Loved it
    :]

  148. fantastic, you should start an art musuem
with nothing but visuals like that,

    great mind you have!

    zoey

  149. Dang JK you’ve got a lot of comments on here! Talk about becoming an overnight sensation! I really admire your patience and habitual-minded tenacity with taking all those photos. It really is inspiring. I can’t believe how much you changed over eight years! Please continue this project… I am excited to see how much more you will change in the next eight years. This video should get featured on David Letterman or Jay Leno… it’s great!

    Fantastic Job!

What a wonderful project; really, holding out just six months would have been an achievement for me.

I felt nostalgic, seeing how your face changed but your eyes remained the same.

Good luck with anything you’re doing next.

  151. Excellent project. I’m very impressed.
By the way - I’m sure you get this a lot but you are incrediby hot. I know i know - I’m totally debasing your art - but seriously - that windblown hair… wow.

Ok that was rediculious posting :)

  152. Wow. You could totally be an CIA undercover man. You can pull of geek, rouge, inmate, boy next door, and everything in between!

badass… i liked it! whats the song u have playing? i liked it… very different mixture of hardcore techno and some other shit…

The music was derived from a track called ‘Miss Candy on TV’ by a musician named Jankenpopp.

  156. The passing of time accelerated by the advancement of technology - or so it would seem.
    Great idea and great patience.
