Okay, so here’s my course of action:

I’m trying to find info on an upcoming performance at Elizabeth Dee Gallery, so I type ‘elizabethdee.com’ into the address field of my browser, Firefox. I get Elizabeth Dee’s Journey to Music City USA. Fair enough, so I click in the address field after ‘dee’ and inadvertently type ‘galllery’ and hit return. This sends me to XXX Mature Galllery. Yes, misspelled. I realize that Firefox on the Mac automatically selects all the text when you first click on the address field. I finally get it right by typing in ‘elizabethdeegallery.com’ and am at the gallery website.

After fumbling with the interface of Firefox (I think the select-all action is odd) and seeing the infinite closed loop that is XXX Mature Galllery, my brain is focused on ‘XXX’ and the address bar. I type ‘xxx’ into the address field and get…

I would have thought for sure the porn industry would have seized that domain ASAP. Huh. Mind you, Firefox does not change the address field to indicate that this is not ‘xxx.com’. It merely displays ‘xxx’ happily. I make that assumption myself, since that is how most browsers work (though as I’ll later find out, for good reason, Firefox does not). Not porn? Let’s try ‘x’: X.org Foundation. ‘xx’: Studio XX. It isn’t until I get to ‘xxxxxx’ that porn pops its head up (no pun intended).

That’s when I decide to compile a list of how far I can take the power of ‘x’ and create this informal survey. I start again from ‘x.com’. It shows a PayPal page. What happened to the X.org Foundation? Then I remember that Firefox uses keywords. Typing ‘x’ does not default to ‘x.com’ and therein lies the answer to my problem. Type in ‘xxx.com’ and you are rightly taken to porn. Thank God the industry kept abreast of that domain (pun intended).
