Stitched with Love, by my Mom

Princess Peach Shirt
I got my grid-pattern dress shirt back from my Mom. I sent it to her so she could cross-stitch the Princess from Super Marios Bros. above the right cuff. I knew I’d never make the time to do it, and well, she cross-stitches. I must say, it came out amazing! Even better than I had hoped.

Now, during the process she called me up and asked me, “Why in the world would you want a princess on the sleeve of your shirt?” A fair question, and well, it’s because I’m a huge dork. A little background:

  • - I’m currently really into embroidery.
  • - I spend way too much time in front of a computer
  • - I’ve always thought that the grid-pattern on my dress shirt looked like pixels
  • - I love Super Mario Bros.
  • - Lately, I’m a major queen (though many would argue this is not a recent event)

And so, I set out to make something that explored the idea of shirt as pixel screen. And what better way to do this than by creating some sort of geeky hero complex? Okay, I’m not really sure I know where I’m going with this… I wanted to do it. So, much Love to the Mom for crushing this out.

2008 Jan 20 Update:My Mom Wins!

2007 Dec 15 Update: Help make this the “Best Geeky Craft of 2007″! Visit GeekSugar and vote for the shirt. I doubt I win anything besides international fame and fortune, so I guess it’s not that important a vote.

That’s hilarious and yes you must be a huge dork…sorry I don’t even know you but it made me laugh since I use the evolution of Mario as a way to explain the concept of pixilated images to my commuter class(I guess that makes me a bit dorky)…. do you mind if I mention your pixel shirt in my next class?

Hey! Just cause I say I’m a huge dork, doesn’t mean I want outside confirmation! ;)

But, by all means, mention the shirt.

I’m slowly exploring your work, ill be sure to ask some more questions later. I think I’m becoming a bit of a fan actually. Its inspiring me to organize my work a bit and put it online. Thanks!

I don’t know if you’d consider this selling out or not (and if you did consider it selling out, if you would be opposed to it), but there’s big money in this idea. You could definitely sell this kind of shirt to high-end botiques and make a killing. Just throwing it out there… All the best!

& Alan Eagle & Maarten P. Kappert & Coleman: I really can’t sell this shirt nor have my mom make them to sell as it would be a gross violation of Nintendo copyrights. I’m not really into legal wrangling, so it’s going to have to remain a personal endeavor.

Hi again. Ignore my previous comment, as I have just read your comments regarding the spider shirt. Sorry for those 20 seconds of your life you spent reading my comment that you will never get back.

    Just got here from Geeksugar.
I love your Princess Peach in cross stitch ! Any way you would send me the pattern?

I’ve done a few game crosstitching myself, mostly to put on my boyfriend’s tshirts. He keeps nagging me to make more actually.

I found that stitching on a piece of aida then sew it on a tshirt means that the design lasts longer (sturdier piece of fabric you can cut out and sew on another tshirt later).

I hope you’ll make more designs your mom will be able to stitch !!!

& julia & Stephanie: Here’s the pattern that I gave to my mom. She just matched the colors as close as she could. Not sure where I got this image from, so my apologies if it is yours, I don’t mean to not credit…

I hate statements like this. Spending time actively participating in the construction of one’s own environment hardly seems like a waste. Also, what’s wrong with free time? All work and no play makes Jack a dull boy.

You should sell that idea to a clothing company, you could make money off it. have a clothing line, one with a jumping yoshi on the left shoulder, one with a mario peeking over the bottom of the shirt, one with a shyguy on the back…
