ASL Matchbooks at Incredibly Thin

Photo of ASL Matchbooks at Incredibly Thin Spectacular

While I didn’t do any advertising of the event, on Friday I debuted my sign language matchbooks. At the Incredibly Thin Miniature Spectacular, I showed a full ASL alphabet as well as a version of the original inspiration for the matchbooks (see #2 of previous post). Dave Glanz took the photograph for me, which I’m thankful for, since I haven’t gotten my new digital camera yet.

What I’m really surprised at is that no one got drunk (and stupid) enough to set the matches ablaze. I’m very thankful, but it wouldn’t have shocked me…

I’ll get a page made specifcally for the matchbooks soon. But since I’m in the process of moving to Detroit, and getting prepared for grad school, it might be a while. Need to get my new camera as well I think.

Whoops, guess I should thank Ryan for asking me to be a part of the festivities. I probably wouldn’t have gotten around to making the full alphabet without the impetus of the event. So, thanks!

Hey ur ingenuity astounds me yet again!

Urs is one of the few sites i regularly check back on and im yet to be disappointed!

Keep up the inspiring work and be sure to give masses of prior warning should any of ur stuff ever be shown in London.

    Ta’ra

    • Again, thanks for the compliment. It’s obviously quite nice to know that people are seeing the site on a regular basis and are enjoying the work.

Now that I’m at Cranbrook, things should start to pick up on the production front. And I’ll try my best to keep up on the documentation/blog front. Of course, with two fronts, where’s the back?

I’ll be sure to give fair warning should I be in London anytime soon. Italy at the end of September, but no plans for London any time soon. Someday.

  • Italy!?! Oh you’re such a lucky bastard! Is it purely vacation or for classes or what? Regardless, I’m sure you’ll have a great time…

Btw, I love the matchbooks. Never thought of them as fingers, but you definitely made them look like little hands. You’ve done some excellent work… Hopefully someday I’ll catch one of your shows.

    • Sometimes I am a lucky bastard. Yeah, Italy’s for school. Supposed to be an awesome time in Venice. I’ll be sure to post info when I get back (maybe even during?). And again, thanks for the complements. I hope someday I’ll have enough shows that it’ll be easy for you to see one. But for now I’ll just work hard.

Love your Matchboxes - Will you be selling any sets?

    • I would definitely be willing to part with a set of these, but it would cost over 500$ at least for all 26 letters (and no I wouldn’t split the set).

Thanks for the words of encouragement!

    Greetings,

Stumbled on your blog today. Not sure if you are still in the Detroit area, I live in Walled Lake. Just recently retired and was cleaning out the condo before moving out to San Diego. Came across my old “collection” of matchbooks back in the days when I travelled a lot for my company. I got in the habit of collecting matchbooks wherever I ate, slept, etc.

If you have any interest, you can have the lot….free. Amounts to about 3 shoe boxes full. Just hate to trash them.

    Regards.

    Dear Uncle Jonathan,
Grandma and Grandpa are here so we checked out the website. We like the matchbooks and the boxbots, but our favorite is the jumperbumper thing. That was pretty funny. Christopher doesn’t like it when people write in and swear. We don’t think you’re “screwed up” but you really need a shave and a haircut. Our school secretary wants to know if you’re married. Mom told her no, but you’ve got a really nice girlfriend. Please become a famous artist and visit our school.

    Sincerely,
Your nieces and nephews from Iowa

    • Don’t worry guys, I’ll only have the hair and moustache a couple more months, but I am happy that you like the work! Yes, your mom is right, I do have a really nice girlfriend. I’ll keep working on becoming a famous artist, though finishing school’s my main concern currently.

And I’m glad you have such clean mouths. :)
