Sugar-free chewing gum cannot be labeled as low-calorie, however, because it
contains more than 40 calories per 50 grams. It’s stupid, but that’s what the FDA rules. The regulation was originally implemented to prevent calorie dense foods like sugar and salad dressings from being labeled as “low calorie”.
