Ugh, this is the last straw for shared serving via Dreamhost. They’ve lost my blog database twice (luckily refound after prodding), throttled two of my sites on account of increased traffic (popularity), had too many e-mail problems to count, and finally they take down this site because they believe it is under a DDoS attack, which after a full day of downtime they tell me probably wasn’t an attack, but increased traffic due to a significant linkage. I knew this already, as I had been linked on a site that I won’t post here as it is very Not Safe For Work (NSFW). I guess this is what I get for 20$ a month.
I need to find a better solution for hosting, which will probably put me in the dedicated server arena. This is territory I am fully unfamiliar with. First of all is the jump in price. I don’t make money from this or any other site. Sure, some people have donated money to help the cause (which I am truly grateful for), but I’ve put in much more than I have received. Going from 20$ a month to something like 100$ a month is pretty significant. Especially considering that I would be in charge of managing the server somewhat. Seriously, I do not need to be obsessing over that aspect of things as well…
Not sure where I am going with this post. I need to find a better hosting solution, if you have any good leads, leave a comment. Thanks for reading and my apologies for the downtime.

Jonathan,
I’m just sharing my $.02, as you asked for suggestions or recommendations. I read your site quite regularly, at least when my Netvibes tells me too. I’d like to see it stay.
I currently use Lunarpages and have a number of clients who do as well. I’ve only had one hiccup with them so far and that was fairly minor.
I used to use Hurricane Electric and have nothing but positives. I used them for almost 8 years and only had one outage. Granted, once again, I’m not pulling the traffic they are.
Both companies had/have great customer service.
If you’re going to go with a dedicated plan, FYI, you can set yourself up with a managed plan so you don’t have to do as much management.
That’s it for now. Maybe a nice discussion will ensue. Regardless, I hope you’re well.
Sincerely,
andrew
ServerPronto.com has always intrigued me. $30/mo. can get you a server all to yourself. With your choice of OS. The downside is you’ve got to be your own admin…and they charge for reboots.
